About
I'm Leonie van Someren, a Dutch artist, photography teacher and every now and then a photographer.
For me, photography has always been about connection. Not only with a subject, but with the story behind it. Whether I am standing in front of a classroom, creating an artwork, or making a portrait, my work starts with curiosity. Who are you? What matters to you? What deserves to be seen?
After many years working as a commercial photographer for brands including Picnic and Albert Heijn my focus gradually shifted. Today, I work primarily as a photography teacher at the Media College Amsterdam, where I help the next generation of image makers develop both their technical skills and their creative voice.
Alongside teaching, I create autonomous work that explores themes such as identity, resilience, health and human connection. Much of my recent work is inspired by my experience of living with type 1 diabetes. Using photography and mixed media, I transform the materials and experiences of chronic illness into stories of strength, visibility and self-acceptance.
Every now and then, I still take on portrait commissions. The reason is simple: I love people. Creating a meaningful portrait remains one of the most rewarding forms of photography for me. My goal is never just to make someone look good, but to create an image in which they recognize themselves.
Whether as an artist, educator or photographer, I believe images have the power to create understanding, spark conversation and help people feel seen.
